The MCSS launched the virtual 2021 Michigan Student Success Summit with an overview of the Summit and the perennially popular update on the status of statewide projects and initiatives.

MiHealthy Lifestyle Session

Kalamazoo Valley Community College's celebrity Chef Cory Barrett showed us how to make a nutritious and delicious recipe perfect for fall entertaining, Grilled Vegetables with White Bean Hummus and Tomato Garlic Vinaigrette. We reviewed a segment of a longer video on Healthy Summer Celebrations.

Leadership Perspectives on Race, Health, and Student Success

Let’s talk about race. This panel discussion will focus on leadership reflections on racial diversity, equity, and inclusion and the intersection with student success and healthy colleges. In addition to hearing from panelists, the attendees will be invited to ask questions and hear about MCSS’s ongoing priority to center equity in our student success strategy.

We kicked off wellness Wednesday with an exercise in mindfulness through a superb Michigan Meditation setting the tone for a peaceful day.

Collaborating to Support a Healthy Community

Now more than ever, community colleges are collaborating with workforce development and public health on decisions that create positive impacts in their communities. A panel from Lake Michigan College and their local partners will share their experience to provide a jumping-off point for a broader discussion of opportunities for community support during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

THURSDAY | SEPTEMBER 23

Yoga with Kassandra provided a gentle chair yoga flow to clear our minds for a great day of peer learning on the final day of the Student Success Summit.

Healthy Colleges Building Economic Stability Practices

We enjoyed virtual tours of the Lenore Croudy Center at Mott Community College, the downtown extension site at West Shore Community College, and the expansive food pantry at Grand Rapids Community College, three MI-BEST colleges that are addressing barriers to student success. In addition, this session featured student stories and share the results of a statewide survey of basic needs administered to over 10,000 community college students.

Healthy Leaders Supporting Healthy Students

Healthy professionals can best support healthy students, and MCSS welcomed our keynote speaker, Dr. Dominique Hammonds, to the stage. With her skill of merging the worlds of higher education and holistic wellbeing, we discovered actionable strategies that lean into practitioner balance and strength and held space for recovery and reflection of the past year. It was great to virtually assemble and communally learn of ways we can create institutional cultures that foster wellness. T
