New Report makes a strong case for the value of certificates, now the second most common award in American postsecondary education.

Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce has just released an important study on the growing number of certificates awarded by postsecondary institutions. Titled, "Certificates: Gateway to Gainful Employment and College Degrees," it makes a strong case for the value of higher education certificates, while analyzing the very different labor market impact that these credentials can have. Key findings:

National Public Radio segment on the lack of qualified manufacturing workers, spotlighting Kalamazoo Valley Community College’s production technician academy.

A new agreement between Michigan State University’s College of Nursing, Macomb Community College and Lansing Community College, make it easier for nursing students to take classes at MSU and graduate.

Kalamazoo Valley Community College's Production Technician Academy - a competency-based, fast-track program to prepare production workers for an advanced manufacturing environment - was designed by local employers who are looking for a way to meet the growing demand for qualified production workers and fill local manufacturing jobs.

Lansing Community College’s Military Medic to Paramedic Program gives boost to veterans.

LCC’s program is one of at least two in the U.S., and the grant-funded program allows students to apply their military experience toward their degrees. Retired Army General Eric Shinseki Ferrell, who now serves as head of the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, is speaking at LCC’s graduation

Grand Rapids Community College is teaming up with the State of Michigan’s Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to offer a Veterans Resources Fair.

Oakland Community College is training 190 new employees at two global firms, DENSO International and EMAG L.L.C.

DENSO International and EMAG L.L.C. are expanding design, engineering and manufacturing operations in Oakland County. Oakland Community College obtained more than $3.1 million in training incentives for these two projects through the Michigan New Jobs Training program.

National initiative, Right Skills Now, has selected Wayne County Community College District to bolster the region's manufacturing workforce.

The program is an expedited manufacturing training program led by The Manufacturing Institute, The National Association of Manufacturers, The National Institute for Metalworking Skills, American College Testing and the President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. WCCCD is the first state college to launch Right Skills Now
