Michigan Revenues Increase By $482.6 million

 Economists at today's Michigan Revenue Estimating Conference agreed that revenues for the current fiscal year are $396. 9 million higher than expected for the General Fund and $85.7 million higher than expected for the School Aid Fund.  The debate now turns to how to use those funds.

Divided Federal Court Says Schools Do Not Have To Collect Union Dues

The U. S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals has overruled a lower court decision, holding that a 2012 Michigan law is constitutional and schools do not have to collect union dues for their employees.  In Bailey v. Callaghan, the court said the U.S. Supreme Court has effectively already held that local governments do not have to be compelled to collect dues for their workers unions.  Note: In this act, “public school employer” does not include a community college.

Supreme Court Hearing Affirmative Action Cases

A pair of Supreme Court cases that consider the constitutionality of using race as a factor in college admissions could have a broad impact on higher education. On Monday last week, the Supreme Court agreed to examine the constitutionality of a Michigan law that prohibits colleges in the state from considering race in public college admissions, and it is currently deliberating a similar case involving the University of Texas. National Article Highlights Northwestern Michigan

A New York Times article highlights the  the small-business/entrepreneur certificate program at Northwestern Michigan College!  The Northwestern Michigan program offers eight classes in four core areas: starting a business, financial management, marketing and customer service. Elective classes cover topics like how to run a bed-and-breakfast, how to become a personal trainer and how to bring your business online legally.

Six Community Colleges Selected for Michigan Pathways to Credentials Grants

 The Michigan Center for Student Success (MCSS) has awarded grants to six community colleges to improve the design and structure of career pathways programs that serve adult learners.  The funding was provided by The Kresge Foundation who awarded $650,000 to MCSS for Michigan Pathways to Credentials in late 2012.
